OUTPOURING OF GRIEF. Protesters set tree branches on fire Sunday as they block Tel Aviv’s Ayalon highway during an anti-government rally calling for the release of Israelis held hostage by Palestinian militants in Gaza since October after Israel announced its troops had found six dead hostages in a Gaza tunnel. Families of Israeli hostages have called for a nationwide general strike starting Sept. 1 to force the government to reach a deal to secure the release of captives still held in Gaza.
“We must stop the abandonment of the hostages… I have come to the conclusion that only our intervention can shake those who need to be shaken,” said Histadrut union chair Arnon Bar-David.Of the 251 hostages seized during Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel, 97 remain captive in Gaza, including 33 the army says are dead.
A statement announcing Biden’s updated schedule said he and Harris would meet Monday “with the U.S. hostage deal negotiating team following the murder of American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin and five other hostages by Hamas on Saturday, and discuss efforts to drive towards a deal that secures the release of the remaining hostages.”
During protests that convulsed Tel Aviv Sunday night, demonstrators marched past six symbolic coffins draped with the Israeli flag and carried pictures of the deceased hostages. Qatar-based Hamas official Izzat al-Rishq said they were “killed by Zionist bombing”, an accusation the military denied. US President Joe Biden said he was “devastated and outraged” by the hostages’s deaths, but “still optimistic” about sealing a ceasefire deal.In the besieged Gaza Strip, rescuers were digging through rubble for people buried alive by Israeli strikes on a school sheltering displaced in Gaza City.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency, called it a “race against time to reach just over 600,000 children”.
