Iraq is among the hardest-hit by coronavirus in the Middle East.
Iraq's government ordered new coronavirus restrictions including border closures on Tuesday, December 22, even as it signs a preliminary deal to receive 1.5 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.
Non-Iraqi citizens currently in those countries will not be allowed to travel to Iraq, although Iraqis returning from those destinations will be permitted to come home, subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine. Late Monday, health ministry spokesman Seif al-Badr announced Iraq had"formally signed a preliminary deal with Pfizer" to bring in 1.5 million vaccine doses in several stages in early 2021.
Pfizer's vaccine must be stored at -70 degrees Celsius , a temperature much lower than standard freezers and which forced the company to develop special containers for transport. He said Iraq was still in talks to receive more vaccines through Covax, a worldwide network created to ensure equitable access to Covid-19 vaccines.
