A fearless mishmash of time periods has imbued this contemporary Melbourne apartment with a timeless patina.

Enter Prahran horticulturist Julian Ronchi who was enlisted to create something that fit a brief of joyful and bee-friendly. “I just said, I want a really f---ed-up garden, Julian,” laughs Gray, surveying the plantings of laurel, frangipani, pencil pines, crab apple, bay trees, lavender, English roses and a 1920s sculpture of a pair of Japanese cranes.
Nearby, a 1940s Italian buffet console is styled with a mid-century pumice-stone sculpture and a blue Holmegaard vase from the ’60s. When the couple are quizzed on their favourite nook, they’re undecided, but Webber’s study is short-listed. “We really treasure our family heirlooms for their memories and wanted to house these keepsakes in a meaningful way,” says Webber. “So that space has turned out to be the perfect spot.”
