National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. on Wednesday said he sees the influx of Chinese nationals as a security threat.
In a media briefing, Esperon said foreigners, regardless of nationality, can be considered a threat especially if the intent of their visit is not clear or they presented wrong or false documentation.
Esperon, citing Chinese as an example, said some foreigners will come in as tourist and end up as workers. “Ang nangyayari ngayon maraming negosyo dito offshore gaming na pumapapasok, eto ay regulated ng PAGCOR but there are illegal players, illegal operators yun ang problema natin, because some of these Chinese would come in as tourists and they could end up, for the period that they are allowed here, to be workers in such illegal operations,” he said.
Esperon, however, assured that the government is going after illegal foreign workers, adding that interagency meetings are being held between the Department of Labor and Employment, Bureau of Immigration, Department of Finance, and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport management to look into the situation.
“We want our tourists but there is always another side of the coin so to say so we must not let our guards down,” he said.
