PETALING JAYA: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) are in a dilemma over the staging of the two proposed World Tour legs and the season-ending World Tour Finals in Asia in November.

Yesterday, the All-Indonesia Badminton Association withdrew their bid to host the three lucrative back-to-back events – two Opens and Tour Finals,

A whopping US$1mil is on offer for each of the Open event while the prize purse for the World Tour Finals is US$1.5mil . PBSI secretary-general Achmad Budiharto said they were forced to call off the bid because of the surge in Covid-19 cases in the last three weeks.“Players will not want to come to Indonesia, besides there are also many countries prohibiting their citizens from travelling to Indonesia... as such we have decided to call off our plans to host the events for the health and safety of the shuttlers and their entourage, ” Achmad told Indosport.

It’s not known if other countries want the host job as Indonesia was the only nation to have made a bid. The latest development is a fresh blow to BWF who are currently dealing with the withdrawal of teams from the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals in Aarhus, Denmark from Oct 3-11.Shuttlers from teams skipping the Finals are not expected to play in the two European legs – Denmark Open and Den-mark Masters .
