Kristel Quierrez, a Filipino indigenous youth advocate, receives the 2025 Restoration Steward award and works to protect the Sierra Madre mountain range and indigenous cultural traditions.
Kristel Quierrez, a member of the Agta (also known as Dumagat-Remontado) indigenous community in General Nakar, Philippines, sees being named as a 2025 Mountain Restoration Steward as a platform to highlight the crucial role of indigenous peoples and youth as the 'best managers of the environment'.
This recognition comes at a time when a major infrastructure project, intended to address Metro Manila's water supply issues, is facing strong opposition from environmental groups and indigenous communities. The project, which is under development, threatens irreversible damage to the Sierra Madre mountain range and the displacement of indigenous peoples. Quierrez's commitment to strengthening the indigenous youth community in Sierra Madre is multifaceted. She aims to protect the environment and preserve the culture of her community, starting with her fellow youth in Quezon province. She has witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by indigenous peoples, including the lack of awareness regarding their rights under the Indigenous Peoples' Rights Act (IPRA) and the erosion of traditional cultural practices. The Global Landscapes Forum, the world's largest knowledge-led platform on integrated land use, named Quierrez one of the 2025 Restoration Stewards. She was among seven young environmentalists and the only Filipino to receive the award in 2025. Quierrez's advocacy extends beyond raising awareness about indigenous rights and environmental protection; she also emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with traditional knowledge and practices. She believes that indigenous peoples, particularly the youth, hold the key to sustainable land management and environmental conservation
