Jason Dain captured this vibrant display or the aurora borealis in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. -ContributedI imagine some people are a bit tired this Monday after staying up to watch a spectacular display of the aurora borealis across parts of Atlantic Canada on Sunday night.According to NASA, the sun emitted a strong halo coronal mass ejection on Friday. It resulted in a strong geomagnetic storm that reached Earth’s upper atmosphere on Sunday evening.
While the northern lights are often found closer to polar regions, the intensity of the event sent beautiful hues of greens, pinks and purples southward across much of Canada and parts of the U.S.The weather wasn’t in everyone’s favour for viewing in the Maritimes, especially across Newfoundland, due to cloud cover and dense fog. However, those who did observe them said this was some of the most vibrant displays they’ve witnessed in Atlantic Canada.
