HALIFAX, N.S. — The SS Atlantic ran aground and sank along the coast near Lower Prospect on April 1, 1873 at 3 a.m. The ship was carrying 950 people.

Sal Falk, the event manager, says that the story of the SS Atlantic exemplifies Atlantic Canadian spirit. Falk hopes this event will educate many Nova Scotians that are unfamiliar with the SS Atlantic. She finds it “quite shocking” that the story isn’t more well-known outside of the communities of Prospect, Lower Prospect, and Terrence Bay. She said it’s because of Irish marginalization.
