Deogracias Victor Savellano, a dedicated public servant known for his advocacy for tobacco farmers and preservation of Ilocano heritage, died on January 7th, 2023, at the age of 65.
Agriculture Undersecretary Deogracias Victor Savellano , known for his lifelong advocacy for tobacco farmers and his passion for heritage and culture in Ilocos Sur , passed away on Tuesday, January 7th at the age of 65. The National Tobacco Administration (NTA), where he served as oversight official, announced his death. Savellano's dedication and contributions to the agency and the well-being of tobacco farmers will be remembered. His legacy continues to inspire.
During his time as a Deputy Speaker and Representative for the First District of Ilocos Sur, Savellano actively participated in formulating the Sustainable Tobacco Enhancement Program (STEP) with NTA officials and stakeholders in 2020. As governor of Ilocos Sur for two terms, he initiated the KABSAT Caravan, a program providing free farm machineries and inputs to all farmers in the province, including tobacco farmers. The National Museum also mourns Savellano, recognizing him as a passionate promoter of cultural heritage in Ilocos Sur and the wider Ilocos region. During his time as vice governor, he played a key role in expanding the National Museum complex in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, adding the former Carcel or Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail to the existing museum at the Burgos House in 2013
