ILOILO CITY — The Bantay Dagat Task Force apprehended a crew of fishermen from Cebu after being caught engaging in the banned Danish seine fishing method in the waters off Carles town in the northern part of Iloilo.
The boat's captain, Vencent Villaceran, and his 19 crew members, were arrested by the task force during a routine seaborne patrol operation on June 10.The fishermen were onboard F/B RL when caught engaging in the fishing method, locally known as 'hulbot-hulbot.' They are reportedly from Bantayan Island.The operation led to the recovery of a Danish Seine fishing net, its accessories, and 30 tubs of assorted fish, valued at around P45,000.
Under the order, the owner, operator, and boat captain of the confiscated vessel will face an administrative fine equal to five times the value of the fish caught or P2 million, or whichever penalty is higher.Fishworkers who participated in the operation will also be penalized a fine of P20,000 or will be required to render community service if there is a failure to pay the fine.
