Head of UN nuclear watchdog had said Tehran agreed to restore equipment and hand over data
Grossi’s visit to Tehran came ahead of a meeting of the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency this week to discuss a possible further censure of Iran for failure to cooperate with inspectors. If the IAEA board passes a highly critical resolution, Iran might again respond by increasing levels ofand stockpiles that are already far in excess of the limits set in the nuclear deal of 2015.
It could also destroy some of the camera footage it has been storing at nuclear sites but not handing to the UN inspectors, a move that would further damage the IAEA’s continuity of knowledge about the nuclear programme.
A concern is that Tehran is making vague promises to carry it over the hurdle of the IAEA board meeting. On the other hand, the US, preoccupied with Ukraine, appears not to be in a mood to censure Iran over its nuclear programme or to try to restore the stalled nuclear deal. At his press conference, Grossi dismissed public statements by Iranian officials that they would not give him access to key Iranian nuclear scientists, implying that behind the scenes they are sending him different messages.

Clare O’Neil needs to be ‘prepared’ to stop foreign agents ‘acting to intimidate Australians’It's time for the Home Affairs Minister to show Australians she is “prepared to act” to “stop agents from other countries acting to intimidate Australians”, and ensure consequences, says Sky News host Amanda Stoker. “Fiona Harari's compelling piece in the Weekend Australian this weekend examined foreign interference in Australia in a new light,” Ms Stoker said. “Since the crackdown in Iran began with the death of Mahsa Amini, Iranian-Australians have been faced with considerable uncertainty and fear – not just about the treatment of relatives in Iran, but also about their own safety here in Australia.” Ms Stoker said it’s vital there be a clear pathway for Australians to get the “help and protection they need” when they face threats and intimidation from their country of origin. “If this is a country that values free speech and the right to protest, that kind of protection is non-negotiable.”
