Tired of the market hype, enthusiast Chris Gardener has culled his collection and kept only the real treasures.

Now, I’m down to 56.”For Gardener, a 54-year-old sharemarket operative, they represent the beginning of a passion for accumulating timepieces, and possibly, he muses, the end. Not because he’s lost interest in watches, far from it, but because he feels“I struggle to find something that I really want nowadays. The hype and the prices are too expensive to appeal.
He stepped up to a Tissot, a Longines and, in the mid-1990s, his first Rolex. “It was a Sea-Dweller, pretty beaten up. The bezel was falling off, but it was cheap, something like $1200 or $1400, I could stretch to that. I had it refurbished by Rolex when you could actually visit the service centre.” Followed by Panerais. And Vacheron Constantins. “I would have had hundreds of watches, at one stage something like 16 JaegerLeCoultres, 12 Vacherons, 12 Pateks, and I remember having 46 Omegas and 59 Rolexes at one time.” Gardener says watches were more affordable then. “Your collection could change as your education [about watches] changed.”
