Stacey Cook wasn’t present the night her 26-year-old son Colton Cook was murdered. But she relives the final moments of his life in her nightmares and in each passing day. | SaltWire

Colton Cook's mother Stacey Cook is hugged by a family member after the sentencing of Robert Rogers, convicted of second-degree murder in Colton Cook's death. Rogers, who is nearing 60 years of age, received a life sentence and cannot apply for parole until he has served at least 19 years in prison. And applying for parole, the court noted, does not mean he will receive it. TINA COMEAU PHOTONOTE TO READERS: A warning that this story contains disturbing details.

At the conclusion of a three-week jury trial in January, Rogers was convicted of second-degree murder for the September 2020 murder of Colton Cook. Muise ruled that Rogers, who will soon turn 60 years old, will have to serve 19 years of his life sentence before being able to apply for parole consideration.

At trial, the court heard that Rogers, who was heavily intoxicated, shot Cook and then slashed and stabbed him repeatedly with a machete. He said there were injuries to Cook’s face, head, chest and other parts of his body. He had suffered fractures to bones in his arms. The wounds penetrated his skull and punctured his heart and lung. After he was dead, Rogers cut Cook's leg off with a chainsaw.

Crown attorney Chelsea Cottreau also spoke about Rogers’ previous conviction of attempted murder. The victim was Rogers’ father. Rogers, while drunk, had stabbed him in the neck. Rogers was convicted of attempted murder by a jury in October 2011. Because he didn’t have a lawyer following his conviction, he was only sentenced in January 2014.

The Crown also noted how Rogers had been prohibited from owning or possessing firearms after his attempted murder conviction, yet he had them at his home and used one to shoot Cook. TINA COMEAU PHOTO - Tina ComeauIn her victim impact statement, Colton Cook’s mother described the painstaking heartbreak and anguish her son’s murder has caused.

She told Rogers her son was a good person with a kind heart and not deserving of what happened to him. Maybe Rogers didn’t like the way her son carried himself, she said, but it shouldn’t have gotten him “brutally murdered.”“But you just didn’t care about the person who was my son. You didn’t care about his life and you certainly didn’t care about his pain,” the mother said.
