Members of the Yarmouth U15AA Mariners team were standing behind their teammate Sawyer Kristensen when he was not only suspended for something he didn't do, but also for something that never happened. TINA COMEAU PHOTOYARMOUTH, NS – A Yarmouth County minor hockey team is happy to see one of its players back on the ice after being previously disappointed that he was being penalized not only for something that he didn’t do, but also for something that never happened.
The Antigonish player’s father also said the Yarmouth player was not responsible, as did that team’s coach. That update, Sawyer’s coach said that afternoon, was that Sawyer’s last two remaining games on his suspension have been removed.“Hockey Nova Scotia does not review video and calls on the ice cannot be changed or overturned. Officials need to be supported and hockey cannot be played without them. As per the Hockey Nova Scotia Code of Discipline, there are automatic suspensions associated with specific penalties like spearing.
He says he and his team know and appreciate that Hockey Nova Scotia cannot look at every call or suspension that is made during games – nor should they be expected to. You certainly don’t want to open the floodgates. No one wants that. Sawyer’s family was also disappointed by Hockey Nova Scotia’s initial response. But his mother said even during this negative situation, they were surrounded by a lot of positivity in the form of support.“We never expected to get such an outpouring of support,” said Katreena Kristensen, who said their family, her son Sawyer and the players from both teams have learned many valuable lessons.
She noted her son Sawyer was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at a very young age and throughout his life has learned how to deal with situations that are beyond his control.
