MANILA, Philippines — An ally of former president Rodrigo Duterte and his family in the Senate said on Thursday that he has the numbers for a resolution that would derail the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Sen. Ronald dela Rosa admitted that the initiative, which came from his office, sought to unify inputs from similar resolutions and would be filed next week. 'I already have the numbers,' Dela Rosa said but refrained from disclosing the exact count of the anticipated votes. Dela Rosa has shared copies of the draft resolution with his colleagues.
Senate President Francis Escudero said that if a resolution was submitted, it would undergo the standard procedures, including a debate and a vote in the plenary. The House of Representatives impeached the vice president early this year over the alleged misuse of office funds, violation of the Constitution, among others. The articles of impeachment were transmitted to the Senate but which Escudero had refused to act on because these were turned over during the congressional recess.
