A 34-year-old female was apprehended at NAIA Terminal 3 while attempting to travel to Cyprus for an alleged surrogacy arrangement.
Bureau of Immigration (BI) officers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport ( NAIA ) Terminal 3 apprehended a woman who was allegedly the victim of human trafficking on Tuesday. The 34-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld due to anti-trafficking laws, was attempting to board a Turkish Airlines flight to Cyprus. She initially stated that she was a solo traveler going on a leisure trip, but her story was inconsistent when she accidentally presented an invitation from an IVF clinic.
The investigation revealed that the victim agreed to be a surrogate for someone she had met on a dating app. The individual promised her a payment of P300,000 after childbirth. BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado stated that these types of schemes are prevalent, leading to an increase in online offers for surrogacy or IVF-related services. He warned that victims are often pressured into undergoing certain laboratory tests. 'The scheme continues to thrive, leading to a rise in online offers for surrogacy or IVF-related services, with victims often coerced into passing certain laboratory assessments,' said Commissioner Viado. 'We warn females not to be tempted to agree to such schemes as this is a clear form of trafficking,' he added. The victim has since been provided with support and resources by the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT)
