MALAYBALAY CITY — The Human Rights Watch applauds the acquittal of former senator Leila de Lima of a drug charge filed against her by the government of then president Rodrigo Duterte.
Another case is being tried before a separate court and de Lima has filed a petition for bail which is still under consideration, HRW said. “The cases against de Lima are part of former president Duterte’s vindictive campaign to destroy her for daring to investigate human rights he committed while mayor of Davao City and, later, as president of the Philippines,” it said.
De Lima was arrested in 2017 and accused of taking drug money shortly after announcing a Senate investigation into Duterte’s “war on drugs,” which local and international human rights group said left thousands of mostly poor suspects dead.
