A recent trip to the heel of the boot in Italy felt like a revelation after 2 1/2 years of little travel, thanks to the pandemic.

Nearly three weeks of cycling, swimming and generally loafing in the Puglia region blew the dust out of my brain and gave me a sharp appreciation of the beauty and sweetness to be found in an ancient, sun-baked land that, until recently, wasn’t on many North Americans’ radar. My one-piece swimsuit was positively 19th-century compared to the designer bikinis and cheeky thongs worn by Italians of all shapes, sizes and ages, many basting themselves to a deep mahogany in the sun. The culture of body acceptance in Italy is wonderful but, mi scusi, what about skin cancer? Confession: I revelled in my modest tan acquired from swimming in the velvety sea and cycling for a week through the countryside.

Walking keeps Italians trim and I noticed few obese adults, an observation borne out by stats from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development .
