From sunrises to blue moons, astronomer Nick Lomb sets out what to expect in our skies in 2023.

We all know that feeling of looking up at a silver-flaked night sky with a mixture of wonder and mild confusion: is that Jupiter or Venus? A shooting star or one of Elon Musk’s satellites? And, didn’t the Southern Cross previously have a fifth star?

And that’s what sets this guide apart; it is purposefully designed for our light-drowned cities, with news you can use. “Other publications talk about deep space objects for which you need to go out to the country and use binoculars,” says Lomb, “but the majority of Australians live in cities”. There is, however, a silver lining.

“A full moon happens every month, it’s also at its closest every month,” points out Lomb. “Only occasionally, both events coincide, creating a supermoon.” It will be the second full moon of the month, giving it blue moon status.
