Before her death in 2019, Bouvette said his Kokum followed the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission with interest. But in listening to his Kokum speak about her past, he realized that she had undertaken a path of reconciliation in her own life long before the government process had begun.
He said in his life, he sees this in a willingness to pray more spontaneously rather than following the strict adherence to prescribed Catholic prayers and valuing the wisdom of elders to better inform a spiritual path forward in life. Currently, Nahanee is in the process of getting a Reconciliation Grant from the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops to set up a Squamish language school in the church’s basement. The grant will come from the 30 million dollars that the CCCB has pledged to support healing and reconciliation initiatives across the country.
