Analysis of wastewater has found a big change to codeine consumption across the country following the ban.

Codeine use has dropped significantly following bans of over-the-counter sales of the painkiller, analysis of wastewater has found.

“Over the course of a three-year period [August 2016 and August 2019], we were able to analyse samples for codeine,” said Tscharke, the paper’s lead author. The researchers found a corresponding drop across metropolitan and regional areas, via samples from 48 wastewater treatment plants, representing 10.6 million people - 45 per cent of the Australian population.

The researchers noted states with tropical or subtropical climates such as Queensland saw less variance in seasonal use of codeine, and saw smaller overall falls once the bans came into force.Tscharke said there was also a much larger drop in usage in regional areas compared with metropolitan areas, which he said could indicate a stark difference in how medical services were delivered.
