The Gold Coast’s Sarah Burr is training to compete in the fast-growing sport in the US after being selected to join a team backed by cashed-up sporting giants.
Watching on with regret as a former tennis player who had left the sport, she would see her one-time competitors go on to become international athletes. Now, at the age of 36, Gold Coast mother-of-two Sarah Burr has become Australia’s most accomplished female player of the sport, and is the only Australian invited to join the Arizona Drive team for coming Major League Pickleball tournaments.
“I became a school teacher in mid-2020 so I was juggling pickleball training and teaching until I decided to cut back and became a relief teacher so I could start playing tournaments,” Burr said. The sport became a family affair, Burr reeling in her sister as her doubles partner and the pair winning championships in the state and national competition and the Asia Opens.
