House committee seeks strict monitoring of meat and agri products

The House of Representatives Committee on Ways and Means, chaired by Albay Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda, has called for a strict monitoring of meat and agricultural products amid reports of smuggling cases in the country on Monday, Nov. 22.

The House panel also tackled the streamlining of processes involving the inspection of imported meat and other plant products.

During the hearing, Committee Senior Vice Chair and Nueva Ecija Rep. Estrellita Suansing also called for a motu proprio inquiry into the smuggling of carrots, broccoli, and ginger. A technical working group led by Suansing also learned that Chevron, an energy corporation, has been mixing petroleum products through Customs bonded warehouses.The committee will meet anew to further discuss how to address these issues through legislation.

BOC Assistant Commissioner Vincent Maronilla said that the BoC has suspended the accreditation or license to import of registered Philippine Economic Zone Authority enterprises and other ecozone locators that are being utilized as ‘smuggling conduits’.
