Senator Risa Hontiveros calls on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to certify as urgent a bill to increase wages for Filipino workers as the cost of living continues to rise.
Senator Risa Hontiveros has called on President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to prioritize the passage of a wage increase bill, citing the escalating prices of essential goods and services. In a statement on Wednesday, Hontiveros emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that millions of Filipino workers are grappling with the rising cost of living and cannot afford further delays in receiving higher wages. She warned that every postponement pushes more families deeper into poverty.
Hontiveros stressed the critical importance of raising worker wages, urging the President to certify the bill as urgent. The House of Representatives has already approved on second reading House Bill 11376, which mandates a P200 daily wage increase for all private sector employees, regardless of company size. Meanwhile, the Senate passed Senate Bill 2534 on February 19, 2024, requiring a P100 minimum wage hike. Hontiveros clarified that the proposed legislation will encompass contractual, sub-contractual, and agency-hired workers. While Hontiveros supports the legislated wage increase, she maintains that it is merely a first step. She advocates for a P1,200 daily living wage, asserting that Filipino workers deserve a decent salary that adequately addresses their needs. Recognizing the potential financial burden on micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) due to wage hikes, Hontiveros emphasized the necessity of government support to help these businesses adapt to rising labor costs without jeopardizing their sustainability
