CEBU CITY — A homeless woman died after giving birth to a stillborn baby on the sidewalk of General Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City on Wednesday morning.
Mary Ann Tampos, who lived on the streets with her partner Sherwen Sumagang and their seven children, went into labor at around 6 a.m.Passersby, including a nurse and traffic enforcer, tried to help the 35-year-old woman deliver her baby but the child had died in the womb before birth. Mary Ann Tampos is being consoled by a friend after she gave birth to a stillborn on the sidewalk of General Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City on Aug. 14, 2024.
An ambulance arrived shortly but Tampos refused to be brought to a medical facility, fearing costs of hospitalization.Despite reassurances from the medical responders, the woman showed signs of not trusting the health care system and signed a waiver to avoid hospital care.Her friend, Marie Seno, said Tampos believed the hospital would exploit her and perform unnecessary experiments on her.Tampos insisted on staying on the street, confident she could recover on her own.At around 9 a.m.
