WE are all happy over the performance of our athletes in the recently concluded 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Two gold medals for Carlos Yulo in gymnastics is unprecedented. The first gold medal since the Philippine participation in the Summer Olympics beginning in 1924 was won at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics by Hidilyn Diaz in weightlifting.
Then there are the boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas winning bronze medals in their class. And we do not discount Carlos Paalam, Hergle Bacyadan and Eumir Marcial, who may not have won but put up good performances . And let us not forget EJ Obiena and our golfers Dottie Ardina and Bianca Pagdanganan, who were formidable in a killer golf course. So, too, our lady rower Joanie Delgaco, who distinguished herself. Pagdanganan missed the podium by a hair, which is awesome.
It cannot create an entity like the misbegotten PhilHealth agency of incompetence, venality, red tape and power play. Good intentions don't bring good results without a good plan, effective management and integrity. We have already seen how sports officials can become petty tyrants, if not worse, with regard to the athletes. This should not happen if the Sports Authority is created. It has to be a carefully crafted law giving equal opportunity for athletes under benevolent circumstances.
