This article explores the hidden calorie content of popular holiday drinks and how they contribute to weight gain. It also emphasizes the importance of prioritizing nutritional value over strict calorie counting for a healthy relationship with food.
Christmas is a time for excess, with parties and reunions leading to increased food and drink consumption. While the extra food we eat contributes to weight gain, alcoholic beverages also play a significant role. Nutritionist Christian Jay G. Vasquez explains that alcoholic drinks are primarily sources of calories, lacking essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, or fiber. A gram of alcohol provides about 7kcal of energy.
Vasquez highlights that alcohol's calorie content and addictive potential can lead to overconsumption of calories from food, contributing to holiday weight gain. Vasquez provides calorie counts for popular drinks: Beer (320ml) has 138 calories, Light beer (320ml) has 93 calories, a shot of rum, gin, or whiskey (30ml) contains 89 calories, and 70 proof vodka has 85 calories. Higher-proof alcohols contain more calories. Wine, according to Medical News Today, has 120-165 calories per glass, with sweet wines having the highest. However, Vasquez emphasizes that calorie counting alone isn't a solution for weight management. He encourages prioritizing the nutritional value of food over strict calorie tracking, promoting a healthy relationship with food
