Ed Coleman is a regular columnist for the Valley Journal Advertiser. - File PhotoWhat should you do when a traffic light is out? | SaltWireOn the website, Nova Scotia History Index, Ivan Smith notes that in the 1890s the Windsor & Annapolis Railway's famous Flying Bluenose was setting records running from Windsor to Yarmouth. Smith refers to the train as modern luxurious, speedy and “well accommodated” with a smoking car and the best of service in dining car facilities.
My interest in the famed Flying Bluenose was piqued when I came across an 1895 article written by the management of the W & A Railway solely to advertise its amenities. The article was in a collection of clippings from newspapers published in Kentville and Windsor between 1890 and 1930 – the Western Chronicle and Hants Journal. The railway story is an example of what my former newspaper editor called a “puff piece,” a news release written by a business solely to promote itself.
The Aberdeen Hotel in Kentville had been in business for about three years when the article was printed. While it was privately owned at the time, it was praised highly in the article by the W & A Railway management.
