Depth at centre is a thing and the 2022\u002D23 Edmonton Oilers have it. In spades.
This is a bit of a spurious listing, given that if Holloway makes the team he will be a lot further up the pecking order. Point being that with so much centre depth — seven of the guys listed ahead of him have 200+ games in the league, only McLeod has fewer — the path seems a lot clearer for Holloway to break in on the flanks. Which does not erase the fact that he is quite capable at pivot, and enjoyed a splendid season at the position in UWisconsin only two seasons ago.
Every single one of these guys save McDavid has also seen plenty of time at wing, allowing the coaching staff plenty of flexibility with their line-up choices, or in deployment within a given game. Best guess here is that Woodcroft will return to McDavid-Draisaitl-Nuge-McLeod quartet as his super-strength down the middle, and will be sorely tempted to keep Ryan around due to that right-handed stick. Which likely only leaves room on the big-league roster for one of the remaining three. And for Dylan Holloway, all the time he needs to break in to the NHL at wing, find his comfort level, and maybe then make a challenge for one of the centre spots.
It’s an enviable situation for the Oilers and their fans, at least at this one high-profile position.
