Summer is the season of vacations, get-togethers, and parties – a time meant for fun and enjoyment. Unfortunately, it is also a very critical time for one’s health.
It is no secret that the summer season in the Philippines brings extreme humidity and rising heat indexes each day, causing discomfort and illness among Filipinos. Heatstroke, in particular, becomes ever more rampant during this time of the year.
Given these risks and the rising temperatures globally, it is crucial to emphasize the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring. Hypertension, often asymptomatic and thus dubbed “the silent killer,” can be exacerbated by heatstroke. Regular monitoring of blood pressure is essential for early detection and management of hypertension, which is critical in preventing the strain on the cardiovascular system that can be aggravated by heat-related conditions.
During the hottest parts of the day, take it easy and avoid doing strenuous activities or adjust your workout schedule during the cooler parts of the day. If doing heavy activities during hot hours can’t be avoided, be sure to drink water frequently and take restful breaks. Monitoring weather forecasts for heat advisories can also help prevent heatstroke as this will help you avoid leaving the house and getting under the scorching heat. Avoid wearing excessive clothes as well and opt for loose-fitting and lightweight clothes. Do not neglect the importance of sunscreen. Applying sunscreen will prevent sunburns, which can directly affect your body’s ability to cool itself and cause dehydration.
