We'll always remember the crew of the Miss Ally, who went on a fishing trip in February 2013 but never came back home. On this 10-year anniversary of this tragedy, we offer our collection of stories as we remember Katlin, Joel, Tyson, Cole and Billy Jack.

The Miss Ally fishing tragedy happened on Feb. 17, 2013. Five Shelburne County fishermen were lost to the sea.SHELBURNE COUNTY, NS – On Feb. 17, 2013, tragedy struck southwestern Nova Scotia.All five crewmembers – Katlin Nickerson, Billy Jack Hatfield, Joel Hopkins, Steven ‘Cole’ Nickerson and Tyson Townsend – were lost at sea.

On Feb. 21, 2013, a small flotilla of fishing vessels left from ports in Woods Harbour, East Pubnico and eastern Nova Scotia in search of the Miss Ally’s overturned hull that had been spotted days earlier, but not searched as it was considered too dangerous. Cole’s mother, Marlene Crowell, says the tournament in her son’s memory does bring some comfort, but for the most part, life has been lonely since losing Cole.
