‘Haze getting worse, reduce outdoor activities’

The haze is causing increased public concern in Penang, with privately installed air quality sensors recording even higher API readings at a school.

Some readings, taken less than 10km from API measuring stations of the Department of Environment , are showing readings that are almost 50% higher. Dalat International School director of technology Joel Roberts said that after a major haze episode about five years ago, the school installed the two sensors in different buildings to obtain readings at 10-minute intervals to help in the planning of outdoor activities for the students.

The readings taken by both sensors are published on various sites, including on the non-governmental World Air Quality Index website .State environment committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said “it will take a tech expert to understand how the different sensors take readings”. “The average calculation for each parameter is taken at a different range of periods due to the parameters having different exposure periods that are acceptable to humans.
