DHAKA — A mob wielding bamboo rods and plastic pipes beat several suspected supporters of Sheikh Hasina on Thursday, vowing to quash a rumored rally for Bangladesh's ousted premier outside her childhood home. Hasina , 76, fled by helicopter last week to neighboring India as student-led protests flooded the streets of the capital Dhaka in a dramatic end to her ironfisted 15-year rule.

Student protesters grab hold of a suspected sympathizer of Bangladesh’s ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party for paying respects to her father, independence hero Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, during Rahman's death anniversary in the capital Dhaka on Aug. 15, 2024. AFP PHOTOPrevious years saw huge rallies around Bangladesh to mark the occasion, but those glad to see Hasina toppled were eager to ensure that supporters of her Awami League party did not have a chance to regroup.
