The QE II Heath Sciences Centre in Halifax is at "serious overcapacity and is expected to remain that way into the weekend. - FileThe QEII Health Sciences Centre is experiencing “serious overcapacity” that is affecting inpatient care and the emergency room, and is having a trickle-down effect through the health-care system, officials said Tuesday.
Of the 44 beds in the Halifax Infirmary emergency department, 31 were in use by patients who had been admitted but for whom no inpatient beds were available. Another 13 patients were in the consulting stage, who need to be seen and will likely be admitted. “When inpatient units are overcrowded and services are overcrowded, there is no place for the patients in the emergency department who have been admitted to go.”
“Ideally, to function well, any hospital should be at a capacity of about 85 per cent,” Watson said. “That gives any hospital the ability to handle surge.”Watson said there isn’t a particular reason for the over capacity, such as an increase in flu cases, although that is expected to come in the next few weeks. She said the complexity and acuity of the patients in hospital now are higher, and significant staffing issues are expected for the next week.
