A recent survey by OCTA Research paints a concerning picture of poverty and hunger in the Philippines, revealing that half of Filipinos identify as poor and nearly two-thirds have faced involuntary hunger. The survey also highlights regional disparities, with Mindanao and the Visayas experiencing the highest rates of poverty and food insecurity.
A recent survey conducted by OCTA Research, titled Tugon ng Masa, revealed a stark picture of poverty and hunger in the Philippines . The survey, conducted from November 10th to 16th, 2024, found that 50% of Filipinos, equivalent to an estimated 13.2 million families, identified themselves as poor. This represents a 7-point increase from the second quarter survey conducted in August, adding an extra 1.3 million families to the poverty count.
Mindanao reported the highest percentage of self-rated poverty at 69%, a 9-point jump from the previous survey. The Visayas followed closely at 59%, while Balanced Luzon saw a significant increase, rising from 30% to 43%. The National Capital Region (NCR) had the lowest rate at 30%.Adding to the grim picture, 47% of respondents, or 4.2 million families, reported experiencing involuntary hunger in the fourth quarter, a 4-point surge from the August survey. Balanced Luzon again had the highest prevalence at 23%, followed by the NCR and Visayas at 11% and 10% respectively. Furthermore, almost half of the respondents, 49% or 12.9 million families, described themselves as 'food poor', struggling to access sufficient and nutritious meals. This figure reflects a 7% increase from the August survey. Mindanao had the highest rate of food insecurity at 72%, followed by the Visayas at 60%. The NCR reported the lowest rate of food insecurity at 20%. A median monthly income of P10,000 was found to be necessary to avoid being classified as food poor
