Hady Habib, the first Lebanese man to compete in a Grand Slam singles tournament in the Open era, achieved a historic victory at the Australian Open.
Hady Habib, the first Lebanese man to compete in a Grand Slam singles tournament in the Open era, made history on Sunday by winning his first match at the Australian Open. Habib defeated China's Bu Yunchaokete 7-6 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (6) in front of a boisterous crowd. 'This is probably one of the best days of my career, honestly.
It's such an incredible feeling to get this win—not only for myself but for Lebanon and Lebanese tennis,' said the 26-year-old Habib, who is ranked outside the top 200 on the ATP Tour. Habib, who spent his childhood in Lebanon, said the crowd's support was a significant factor in his victory. 'As you guys could see there, the crowd was absolutely wild. It made it even more special to win in front of them…. I felt the energy out there.' This win comes at a challenging time for Lebanon, amidst the ongoing war between Israel and Hezbollah. 'It's a huge win, especially what we've been going through as a country,' Habib said. 'It's just nice to get this win for Lebanon and for the people.' Habib qualified for the main draw after winning three matches in the qualifying rounds. He will now face France's Ugo Humbert in the second round. Meanwhile, top-ranked men's player Jannik Sinner and five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek also kicked off their Australian Open campaigns with victories on Monday. Sinner defeated Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-1, while Swiatek overcame Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 6-4
