Edmonton’s and Calgary’s lefty mayors and councils can insist we need to address the reasons such as poverty, addiction, undereducation and learning disabilities that are behind people becoming addicted, homeless or drawn to crime.
But “root causes” theories in the absence of here-and-now policing will do nothing but spur a steady rise in crime, and thus a steady rise in innocent citizens who are victimized. Police and Crisis Teams pair constables and mental-health therapists who respond to 911 calls not only with police tactics, but also with treatment for offenders suffering psychological and drug problems.
Of course, the federal Liberal government has a role to play in making our cities safer, too. But don’t hold your breath that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his ministers will step up to their responsibilities.
