DESPITE a warning from the Department of Agriculture about a possible egg shortage by April 2025, a group of poultry farmers and industry experts in Cebu anticipate an oversupply, contradicting the agency’s earlier report. This could lead to lower egg prices this February and in the coming months but may also pose challenges for local farmers, according to Leonardo Onosa, public information officer of the Bantayan Island Layer and Hog Raisers Association.
In 2024, the total layer inventory in the region reached 18,775,025 chickens, with Cebu having the largest share at 16,523,407, followed by Bohol with 2,041,626, Siquijor with 176,813, and Negros Oriental with 33,179. Regarding table egg production, the region produced a total of 89,121.45 metric tons in 2024—Cebu, 78,693.08 MT; Bohol, 7,889.90 MT; Negros Oriental, 1,729.75 MT; and Siquijor, 808.72 MT.
