A group of citizens opposed to the amalgamation are going to court to try to stop it. - AARON BESWICKANTIGONISH, N.S. — A concerned citizens group is asking the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia to quash the pending consolidation of the Town and County of Antigonish.
“It’s the Municipalities Act that authorizes a municipality and gives them all their power, within that act there are two different methods for an amalgamation of a municipality,” said Ann-Marie Long, member of the group Let Antigonish Decide. In October, County council passed a motion to seek special legislation from the provincial government that will consolidate the town and county into one municipal entity.
The group has argued that the councils don’t have a mandate to seek consolidation because they did not hold a plebiscite on the issue and it wasn’t on the table at the time of the last municipal election.
