Greta Thunberg says Germany should keep nuclear power plants running | latikambourke
Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has told German television that it is better for Germany to keep using nuclear power than restart coal plants.
Merkel immediately shut down eight of Germany's 17 nuclear reactors following the Fukushima disaster on Japan in 2011 and ramped up its reliance on Russian gas instead. But following Vladimir Putin’s war on Ukraine, Germany now wants to wean itself off Russian gas by 2024. Questioned on German television whether nuclear or coal is the better option, Thunberg backed nuclear.“It depends,” she said. “If we have [nuclear] already running, I feel that it’s a mistake to close them down in order to focus on coal.”Germany’s Finance Minister and head of the free-market Free Democrats Party , Christian Lindner, welcomed Thunberg’s comments.
France and the UK have set out plans to ramp up their nuclear ambitions to secure independent and carbon-neutral energy sources following the energy crisis.
