Green Bones is a Philippine film that delves into the complexities of the justice system and the human condition. It follows the story of an inmate nearing release and the new jail guard whose prejudice threatens his hopes for a fresh start.
It’s easy to judge persons deprived of liberty (PDLs)—those who have committed crimes and are serving time. Society often labels them as unworthy of second chances. But Zig Dulay’s “Green Bones,” pushes back against that idea, offering a raw and emotional take on redemption, human resilience, and the broken systems that trap people in cycles of crime and punishment. The story follows Domingo Zamora or Dom Saltik (Dennis Trillo), an inmate at San Fabian Correctional Facility.
Dom is counting the days until his release, clinging to the hope of starting over. But his dream of freedom comes under threat when Xavier Gonzaga (Ruru Madrid), a new jail guard, arrives. Gonzaga believes that people like Dom—who allegedly killed his own sister and niece—cannot change, a conviction fueled by the former’s personal experience. The new jail guard’s personal bias transforms the prison into a tense battleground of mistrust, prejudice, and buried truths. The title “Green Bones” carries symbolic weight. Some cultures believe those who live virtuous lives have a green bone in their body, untouched by malice or hatred. But can someone like Dom, convicted of a heinous crime, ever embody such an ideal? This question becomes the heartbeat of the film, challenging assumptions and inviting viewers to look deeper into the humanity of those behind bars. The first act masterfully sets the tone. As viewers, we are placed squarely in Gonzaga’s shoes—outsiders who are looking in, quick to judge. Madrid’s portrayal of the skeptical, hard-nosed jail guard is so effective that it’s hard not to align with his viewpoint.Dom and his fellow inmates are introduced as rough and untrustworthy, feeding into Gonzaga’s narrative that “once a criminal, always a criminal.” The film keeps us at arm’s length which mirrors Gonzaga’s detachment from the world within San Fabia
