abc.net.au/news/kimba-nuclear-dumping-plan-abandoned/102711320The federal government has formally abandoned plans to build a low-level nuclear waste dump near Kimba in regional South Australia. The Federal Court ruled against Coalition plans to dump nuclear waste thereLast month the Federal Court ruled in favour of the area's traditional owners, the Barngarla people, who had argued they were not properly consulted by the former Coalition government about the decision to pick the site.
In parliament, Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King said the government respected the court decision. "The Federal Court did not rule against the site but set aside a ministerial decision on administrative grounds," Nationals Leader David Littleproud told the House. "If Labor only intends to build infrastructure that has 100 per cent support from Aboriginal groups, then very little infrastructure will ever be delivered in the future."Ms King said Australia needed a nuclear storage facility, but argued it could not be at the Napandee site.
