Documents released by the Supreme Court reveal barrister-turned-informer Nicola Gobbo has launched a lawsuit against Victoria Police, and alleges the force ruined her life and put her safety at risk.

On Friday, the Supreme Court of Victoria dropped a suppression order prohibiting any public disclosure about the existence or content of Gobbo’s lawsuit, despite opposition from Victoria Police.

“[Gobbo] seek[s] exemplary damages which should be awarded to punish those Victoria Police officers and deter other police officers from doing what has been done to [Gobbo],” the current statement of claim says. This includes an allegation that former chief commissioner of police Simon Overland – who was an assistant commissioner when he first allegedly permitted the use of Gobbo as an informer – committed “malfeasance in a public office” by allowing Gobbo to be registered and used.

“Had Overland validly exercised his power and not permitted the use of [Gobbo] as a Victoria Police informer, [Gobbo] would not have suffered the injury, loss and damage alleged herein.”Gobbo has claimed Victoria Police is responsible for ruining her life, but most of the details of the mental, physical and emotional damage she claims to have suffered were redacted from the released documents.
