Senator Bong Go emphasizes the need for proactive disaster preparedness following heavy flooding in Sarangani province, urging the government to strengthen disaster management strategies and push for the establishment of a Department of Disaster Resilience.

SEN. Bong Go has called for increased vigilance and proactive disaster preparedness following the recent flooding in Alabel, Sarangani , that affected some 800 families. Heavy rains brought by the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and the northeast monsoon inundated five barangay (villages), forcing residents to evacuate to temporary shelters. In a statement on Monday, Go urged both national and local governments to strengthen disaster management strategies.

'The safety of every Filipino should be the top priority. In the midst of calamity, we must ensure that we are ready and be able to respond immediately,' Go said. He renewed his push for the passage of Senate Bill 188 creating the Department of Disaster Resilience (DDR). Go raised the need for long-term solutions that go beyond immediate relief efforts. The proposed DDR aims to centralize and streamline disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts across the country.'We should not always be focused on relief operations. We should have a clear and comprehensive plan to address any incoming calamity,' he said. Go said the DDR will focus on the efficient and organized response to any man-made or natural disasters. He also stressed the importance of pre-disaster planning, including better coordination among local government units and agencies, as well as the prepositioning of relief goods.'The recent floods in Alabel highlighted the challenges of using makeshift evacuation sites, such as covered courts and schools, which often lack proper sanitation and ventilation,' Go added
