TWO major telecom firms are asking President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. not to pass the Konektadong Pinoy Bill and return it to Congress due to loopholes, aside from being unconstitutional in its current form.
In a statement on Tuesday, Globe Telecom emphasized that while the bill's core intent is to make internet access more affordable and universally available for all, this vision can only be achieved with a level playing field across the telecommunications industry.”We are advocating for universal access to affordable and reliable internet. But we believe this bill needs further study and reform.
Cybersecurity issueMeanwhile, PLDT senior vice president, chief legal counsel corporate secretary Marilyn Victorio-Aquino cited cybersecurity as an issue for Marcos to veto the bill.”Data transmission providers are given so much benefits, which are not being given to other telcos. Here they’re requiring us to open all our assets to data transmission providers without foundation that it must be essential,” Aquino told reporters after the company’s First Half Financial Briefing.
