BACOLOD CITY — The Department of Health in the Negros Island Region has assured residents that glanders, a resurfacing contagious rare disease, can be prevented, managed and treated. However, Dr. Razel Nikka Hao, DOH - NIR regional director, said that two of the six confirmed glanders cases in Siquijor have died due to complications while confined at a hospital in Dumaguete City. Hao said the two fatalities were male who were diagnosed with hypertension and diabetes.
Villa, in a Facebook post, said the provincial government of Siquijor, the Negros Island Region One Health Task Force and the DOH-NIR continue to monitor and maintain the health of the community. Glanders is a zoonotic disease that affects animals with hooves such as horses, goats, pigs and carabaos and can be transmitted to humans. It has no known cure. 'Glanders disease can be fatal only if it is not treated early,' Hao said.
