Considering that Gilas Pilipinas is in a race against time, national team assistant coach Jong Uichico said working with a 'core of players' and filling the remaining spots with 'key role players' will be critical as the Philippines prepare for the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
As it is, the Philippines has been playing catch up as far as its bid to reclaim the SEA Games men's basketball gold medal is concerned in the biennial games set to fire off on May 5.'Of course we want to be able to shoot and defense well but we also like to have a core of players who most likely, have played in the window so we don't have to start from scratch,' Uichico told the Manila Times on Wednesday.
Uichico, who steered the Philippines to gold medal triumphs in the 2013 and 2017 editions in Naipyidaw and Kuala Lumpur, respectively, explained that they are monitoring defending SEA Games men's basketball champion Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia's current preparation for the Cambodia cage joust. But then again, they are not counting out Vietnam, which has seen its own basketball build up in recent years due to the presence of Vietnamese-American players.
