They may be a global craze, but artificial intelligence photo generator apps can pose security risks, according to Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro, who issued an order prohibiting military and defense personnel from using the apps.
“All DND and AFP personnel are directed to refrain from using Al photo generator applications, and practice vigilance in sharing information online,” Teodoro said in a memorandum order to the Department of National Defense and Armed Forces dated Oct. 18.
“The online trending digital application that uses artificial intelligence, which requires its users to submit at least 10 photos of themselves to generate an enhanced portrait, poses significant privacy and security risks,” Teodoro said. Teodoro said the collected photos can be used to create fake profiles that can lead to identity theft, social engineering, phishing attacks and other nefarious activities.“This seemingly harmless and amusing Al-powered application can be maliciously used,” he added.
