“Some afternoons we’ll see the ice full of younger skaters just out playing tag on the skating trail… other evenings we will see couples out on a skate date,” Bradley explained. The National Capital Commission has been collecting used trees to make the Rideau Canal Skateway “naturally winter-like” for over 15 years, said Bruce Devine, senior manager of facilities and programs for the Crown corporation.

In the past few years, the donations were mainly unsold trees picked up from the merchants, Devine said.
