Federal police found Christopher Alan Dean with $1 million in $100 bills in the boot of his car which he had parked at the beach.
Today Dean's lawyer Roman Kan said his client's role was that of a courier, for which he was to receive $2,000.
He said Dean's motivation was financial, because his business had run into difficulties and he needed money to pay debts. The court heard the 34-year-old had a history of abusing drugs and Mr Kan said that was likely how Dean came into contact with the people who wanted the cash moved. Prosecutors submitted there was an element of “sophistication” in the offending, but Mr Kan disputed the claim, saying Dean had used a GPS device to get to the proposed drop off location.“There was no element of secrecy to it.Christopher Alan Dean will have to spend two years in prison before he is eligible for release.
Mr Kan told the court there was no evidence Dean knew the specific amount of money involved, and while he was told it was a large sum, he thought it was about $500,000.Money likely crime-related Judge Laurie Levy accepted that Dean’s level of sophistication in committing the crime “was not great” but he said there had been some degree of planning.
